An article I read today says that even pro-athletes can not escape from the stresses of divorce. An estimated sixty to eighty percent of pro-athletes file for divorce. The media seems to blame stress infidelity as the main culprit, but the main reason is the lifestyle is not conducive to a family. There is the constant traveling and absence from family and stress of competition.
Many times, athletes identify themselves through their career and when it comes time to retire or leave that career they become lost and discontented. A divorce takes a toll on both parties and often times they will need to come to terms with the financial consequences that follow, such as attorney's fees, accounting fees, and splitting up the assets. These financial woes can cause a significant lowering of their standard of living, since it is cheaper to live as a family than to support two households. This financial stress can really harm an athletes performance on the field. This will in turn affect their contracts in the future.
The article recomends some solutions to the problem. One of them is prenuptial agreements.
Prenuptial agreements are an important tool to pro-athletes or anyone with significant assets. They can be difficult to discuss with your significant other, but are well worth the temporary stress. Additionally, counseling when the athlete retires from the game can help with readjusting to family life and continuing the family tradition.

No Lawyer Divorce in Michigan
An interesting article about divorce in Michigan says that there is a new experimental process happening in the state. The state is allowing certain couples to be able to file for divorce without an attorney! The Michigan Supreme Court has given permission to two counties for a three-year test of lawyer-free divorces, but not everyone will qualify. In order to qualify they must have a low-income, no real property, no pensions or retirement plans, and no reports of domestic violence or abuse. The couples are able to meet with the judge for 3 sessions to determine their custody arrangements. It is hoped that these lawyer-free divorces will help to ease the court docket and make divorce more accessible to those who can’t afford an attorney in the state.

The High Rate of Children in Divorce
A recent article says that nearly sixty percent of those who file for divorce have children. The article reccomends that how parents talk with their children, during this critical time is important to their future health and stability. A divorce is painful for all involved and many times it’s especially painful for the children. How you talk with and support your children during this time is significant to how they develop healthy relationships in the future. The State of Washington often times requires a four hour class for parents who are divorcing in order to provide them with tools to help their children cope during the process.

Top 10 Reasons for Divorce
A recent article on a website lists ten of the most common reasons people choose to divorce.
1. Infidelity- Infidelity is the most common reason for divorce and is the cause of one third of divorces in the US. The article caims that the infidelity may be consistently during the marriage, or intermittently, or a solitary one night stand.
2. A breakdown in communication- A couple will not have a successful relationship if there is a breakdown or lack of communication. The article further states that an effective relationship can not last if, the parties are unable to discuss their feelings and personal issues.
3. Abuse - There is not a lot of doubt about this one. Abuse of the other spouse or children is a clear indicator of divorce.
4. Financial issues- Financial issues and job loss can cause a strain on a marriage. Often economic woes can put a tremendous strain on a marriage, such as loss of a job or a drop in income.
5. Sexual incompatibility- The article states that research has shown the average strength of the sex drive in men and women aged 10 years apart is most compatible, and for couples with only a few years in age difference will experience a difference of sex drives.
6. Lack of commitment to the marriage- Some couples grow apart over time and fall out of love. These according to the article, are often the least bitter and least angry.
7. Cultural and religious differences- Cultural and religious differences can often cause tension within a marriage that can later lead to divorce.
8. Different expectations regarding children- Some couples have different opinions on having and rearing children.
9. Addiction - This one doesn't need to be explained, since an addicion can negatively affect a marriage and the priorities of the marriage, thus leading to divorce.
10. Different expectations in personal and career issues- According to the article, couples who live together before marriage have a higher rate of divorce than couples who did not cohabit before marriage. Differences in career goals and a spouse’s sudden change in personal priorities are a cause for divorce.

Is Divorce Contagious?
According to an article I recently read there is a 70 percent chance you marriage will fail if you friends are splitting. The article cites statistics where, if your friends or families marriages are falling apart, the transferring trauma could affect your marriage.
The article states that research has shown that divorce can spread families, work places, and friends. Researchers call is ‘divorce clustering’. It’s believed that break-ups within groups of friends cause couples to question their own marriages. Oddly enough, the article says that this can even go as far as friends of friends or coworkers. Furthermore, it’s also suggested that knowing many divorces people can be bad for a marriage and while it was previously suggested that children might help save a marriage, it was found to not reduce the risk of divorce.
